Computer Upgrades

"The Computer Fixy Guy" provides a variety of products and services, which allow you to make the most of your existing computer hardware by upgrading various components of your machine.

You may need to upgrade your machine for a variety of reasons, more RAM to make Photoshop zip along a bit faster, a bigger hard drive to fit your ever-expanding iTunes or movie collection, a better graphics card for faster precision gaming or maybe a DVD writer or Blu ray player. This page is designed to give you an idea of the upgrade products available.

Memory - RAM - Random Access Memory. RAM is by far the easiest and most productive of upgrades to do and can help with:

  • Increase the bootup speed of your computer (turning it on)

  • Increase the speed of using the operating system: XP - Vista - Win 7 - 8 and 10

  • Increase the speed when using software

  • Increase the speed of accessing websites

  • Help prevent the computer from crashing due to lack of memory

  • Ensure design application software uploads your photos & pictures smooth & fast

RAM is your computer's short-term memory, which it uses to store the information that you are working on.

Hard Drives- The longer that you own a machine, the more files and information you build up. With MP3s, digital video and photos your digital lifestyle can soon take over your hard drive. Adding an additional hard drive(s) or replacing your existing drive will allow you to store much more data.  Most desktop computers will have space to run multiple hard drives and they are very inexpensive to add. With laptops, you will only have space for one internal drive, which is currently running your system. This one can be replaced with a larger one, although it's not quite as simple as replacing one in a desktop. One thing to note, of course, is that you will need to transfer your data across to the new drive. This too is a service I can provide.

SSD (Solid State Drive) - This type of drive replaces the hard drive in your computer that holds the operating system. Using an SSD greatly increases the speed of your system. Your PC or Laptop will boot up in seconds instead of minutes. These drives can be expensive if you are looking to use a high capacity one, but the smaller ones start at around £25 for a simple 120GB one. This is one of the best ways to increase the speed of your computer.

Optical Drives- Internal and External Optical devices - CD writers, DVD writers, Blu Ray players and Combo drives are available. These can fit either internally to your machine, or externally, these devices allow archiving and additional storage, and the ability to write your own CDs and DVDs.

Graphics Cards - The graphics card is the device which your system uses to display on its monitor(s). On most desktops, these are quite easily replaced with a faster, better card which allows greater resolutions and increases speed in things like games and other 3D graphics applications. For laptop users the graphics card is often built into the motherboard so is not an upgradeable part.

CPU - Processor- A computer processor (CPU) determines how fast the data is processed when running software/programs. Basically, the slower your CPU, the slower your computer will run. The faster and more powerful the CPU, the faster the computer will work. However, the CPU can only go as fast as the other parts on the computer will allow.
